Nightly Question #2 - 5/9/2011

Some say that the 2nd commandment of the 10 commandments is לא תעשה לך instead of לא יהיה לך. What is the imlication of this?

  1. While לא יהיה לך is referring to the fact that the Bnei Yisrael should not HAVE any other gods, as is implied by the words "יהיה לך," some other times in the Torah the second commandment is stated as "לא תעשה לך," meaning that the Bnei Yisrael should not MAKE idols for themselves. This is done in order to express the two different approaches to the commandment; not only are we not allowed to WORSHIP idols, but we also are not allowed to make them. This interchangeability of the two commandments in this one is expressed in models of the tablets in several shuls across the world.

  2. It is meaning that not only should we not create new idols but we should not believe in other God's as well.
