Nightly Question - 1/27/11

By now you should have reviewed all the answers to the question as to why the Israelites were enslaved. Which one did you like the best and why?
(the second, third, and so on, person to comment on this post must also comment on any fellow student's comment).

  1. I liked the answer that showed a new concept to us. The fact that the enslavement may not have been a harsh thing but a spiritual growth and refinement was the easiest answer to grapple with. I liked most of the answers but I liked the structuring ones better.

  2. One reason BY were enslaved was because they treated Yosef unjustly and sold him as a slave. This reason caught my mind the easiest. It shows that if you treat someone inappropriately or in a way you yourself don't want to be treated then payback will come your way. All of the answers were very interesting to me but this was one that stuck out more than others.

  3. I, just like Gabe, really was able to grasp the answer that had to do with spiritual growth, and not so much a punishment. This was my original answer before we studied the others, and when I saw that a great commentator took the same standpoint as I, I just really had a feeling that it had to be correct.

  4. I am sticking with the answer of the abarbanel who says that the reason why the bnei yisrael were enslaved is because the exile was a stage in development for the bnei yisrael, and it was a preparation for receiving the torah.

  5. I agree with bentzie. The reason why the bnei yisrael were enslaved is because the exile was a stage in development for the bnei yisrael, and it was a preparation for receiving the torah.

  6. I happen to agree with the Hayim Hazaz. He states that we needed to go through an exile and enslavement in order to receive the Torah. We simply needed to be ready to receive the Torah. I disagree with Benzi and Akiva simply because I disagree with the Abarbenel. The Abarbenel fails to explain why Abraham was told about the enslavement. It also fails to mention the importance of the twelve tribes sin. Why was the sin worthy of being enslaved? Why should the whole nation suffer? Why was Abraham told. Therefore, there are obvious issues with that opinion. I like Hayim Hazaz.

  8. I would just like to point out that Akiva copied the second half of Bentzie's post, word for word.

  9. I like the answer that were enslaved because of the brother's sin toward Yosef. There is a source that says a Mitzvah will last for three generations and an avairah will last for four generations and it was about four generations after the last tribe died when they left Egypt.

  10. It's a secret. You'll hear my answer in my presentation. Otherwise, I'm nervous about the quiz tomorrow. Hope we have time to present. Also, in Akiva's defense it was not plagiarism, due to the fact that he accredited his comment to the real author (thus avoiding the issue of plagiarism). Got your back, man.

  11. Well, yes, that is true Dylan. But, for future reference, try to be a bit more creative with your comments, Akiva. You'd be surprised where just a couple of comments would get you in this class.
    Good night everyone,

  13. Much appreciated Dylan. It is true that I did use information from Bentzie's comment, but I acknowledged that I did so again thank you Dylan for defending that point.

  15. Furthering my hatred for having to use technology in class, my time line got deleted I'm unable to see it. I hate that my grades depend on computers that can mess up like this.

  17. I liked Jake's reason for why the Bnei Yisroel were enslaved. I agree that it was so that the Jews could bond as a nation and become more spiritually good.
