Let's try to get this straight.
In exchange #1 please explain Rashi & Rashbam opinion.
Just cut and paste what I put below in a post. Each later blogger should cut and paste what was done before and add and refine the answer.

Good work, Kaplan. I enjoyed collaborating with you.

First Issue - Moshe's worry
ReplyDeleteRashi -Moshe didn't think he was important enough to go and speak to Pharaoh.
Rashbam -Moshe felt that he would not have the ability to fascinate Pharaoh.
First Issue - Hashem's answer/way of comfort
Rashi – since Moshe is a messenger of Hashem, it’s as if Hashem is speaking for Moshe.
Rashbam -Hashem just reassures Moshe saying he’ll be able to interest Pharaoh.
Second Issue - Moshe's worry
Rashi -what is the Jews' reason for being taken out of Egypt.
Rashbam –Didn’t have a clue what to say to Pharaoh and Moshe was worried that he would not be able to convince Pharaoh to let the Jews free.
Second Issue - Hashem's answer/way of comfort
Rashi – They’ll be taken out because they’ll follow Hashem’s commands and torah after.
Rashbam – G-d tells Moshe to say to Pharaoh to let the Jews free in order to follow Hashem’s commandments and to practice their religion.
Issue #1 Moshe's Concern
ReplyDeleteRashi says he's concerned that he isn't worthy of speaking to Paoroh
Rashbam explains that even if he were to talk to Paraoh he would not have the words or "charm" to convince him of anything
Issue #1 Hashems response
Rashi says that Hashems messenger is certainly worthy because if he's sent by G-d, G-d will be with him
Rashbam simply says that Hashem reassures Moshe
Issue #2 Moshes concern
Rashi says that Moshe asks why the Jews are worthy of being saved from Egypt
Rashbam says that Moshe was worried that no matter what, even if he was bringing gifts to Paraoh that he wouldn't believe him
Issue #2 Hashems response
Rashi says that the Jews deserve to go out because Hashem knows they'll keep the Torah and serve Him
Rashbam says that Moshe was just to tell Paraoh to let the Jews go for religious purposes
Since i wrote this all out today i think I'm gna refrain from doing it alll again. It seems like my fellow class mates have it covered. any way through the text i forget the exact words somethng bout hashem saying like it happened yesterday nd the day before tht u can infer tht this conversation happened in onger than one day! so i ask. what did the sheep do for such a long time? did they run away? if so tht is not good showings for leadership
ReplyDeletesome commentators say this took place over several days. interesting question.
ReplyDeleteIssue #1 - Moshe's concern
ReplyDeleteRashi - Who am i that i should go rescue the israelies? why am i so worthy?
Rashbam - I won't be able to convince pharaoh
Issue #1 - Hashem's response
Rashi - I will be with you. I am worthy enough to rescue the israelites so if I'm with you, you will be worthy.
Rashbam - I'll be with you and i'll instill confidence in you and favor you when you talk to pharaoh.
Issue #2 - Moshe's concern
Rashi - What have the israelites done to be deserving of redemption?
Rashbam - Even if i am worthy, what can i possibly say to pharaoh to convince him to let the israelites leave egypt?
Issue #2 - Hashem's response
Rashi - The Israelites are destined to recieve the torah and serve Me when they leave Egypt; they still have lots of potential to be a successful nation after they leave egypt
Rashbam - tell pharaoh the jews need to leave egypt because they have to bring korbanot to Me and serve Me.

I concur with Efroni; I feel like I should not waste my precious packing and preparing time typing ideas which I have already written down in class. I suggest focusing more on the issues at hand rather than taking the time to blog them.
ReplyDeleteJake & Efronit - if it's all correct then I have no problem. Also keep in mind that this post was from a few days ago before we clarified it all in class.
ReplyDeleteOh, okay. I was just making sure. Thanks, Rabbi.
